How to use The Wall of Videos with more details
- I. Search & Explore – Viewing and browsing walls
The first page that loads when accessing Wall of Videos is the “Search & Explore” page. The “Search & Explore” page provides all of the tools and resources necessary to access, view, and browse walls shared on the network. The link to this page is the left of two tabs located at the upper right hand corner of the interface.
The top half of this page displays all of the many options for browsing walls along with other relevant functional components. Four tabs are provided for easy navigation of these functionalities. Click any of the category/genre links in the sidebar menu to organize search results or listed walls by subject matter.
The bottom half provides a space to view and explore walls as desired from the search results – the default wall on display being the wall with overall most hits. Click the linked title of any wall at any point to view the wall in its entirety in the bottom half.
a. Search. The “Search” tab is the first of four tabs laid out horizontally below the “Search & Explore” menu bar on the top half of the page. In the upper right hand corner of this top half, a search field is provided for the user to enter keywords and search the network of shared walls. Type the desired search parameters into the text field and click the button labeled “Search” to conduct the search. To the right of the sidebar menu, the resulting list of walls is displayed in order of designated variables. These variables can be selected according to the preference of the user and include number of viewings, date the wall was created, and overall popularity as measured by favorites, comments, and ratings. Click any of the links laid out horizontally below the four tabs and to the right of the sidebar menu to select a certain factor and organize the results: “Most Viewed,” “Most Recent,” “Top Favorites,” “Most Discussed,” and “Top Rated.” Additionally, a set of four links immediately below these variable links allows the user to narrow or broaden the scope of listed results with respect to time frame – searches can be constrained to “All Time,” “Last 24 Hrs,” “Last Week,” or “Last Month.”
b. My Walls. The “My Walls” tab is the second of four tabs laid out horizontally below the “Search & Explore” menu bar on the top half of the page. To the right of the sidebar menu, a list of walls personally created by the user is displayed. Click the link labeled “Create & Manage” in the upper right hand corner of the top half to create additional walls.
c. Favorites. The “Favorites” tab is the third of four tabs laid out horizontally below the “Search & Explore” menu bar on the top half of the page. To the right of the sidebar menu, a list of walls designated as “favorites” by the user is displayed. Walls can be designated as “favorites” by clicking the link labeled “Add to favorites” beneath the viewing of any wall in the bottom half of the page. To start fresh and clear the present list of favorites, click the link labeled “Clear favorites” in the upper right hand corner of the top half. Alternatively, the user may click the small red “X” to the left of a title listing to strike that particular wall from the list of favorites. The option to “Remove from favorites” appears beneath viewings of favorited walls in the bottom half of the page.
d. History. The “History” tab is the fourth of four tabs laid out horizontally below the “Search & Explore” menu bar on the top half of the page. To the right of the sidebar menu, a list of walls viewed by the user is displayed, the most recent first. To start fresh and clear the present history click the link labeled “Clear history” in the upper right hand corner of the top half. Alternatively, the user may click the small red “X” to the left of a title listing to strike that particular wall from the history.
e. Comments/Ratings. Users have the option of commenting on and rating each others’ walls. In the bottom half of the page, click the link labeled “Comments” below the video canvas. Previously written comments are displayed beneath the wall and a link to write a “New comment” appears. Upon clicking this link, a box with a large text field opens up for the user to enter any comments. Click the button labeled “Send” to complete the process, or click the button labeled “Cancel” to return to the comments page. Ratings are represented on a scale of one to five stars. Drag the mouse over the field of empty stars to the right of the link labeled “Add to favorites.” Red stars fill in the empty fields as the mouse is dragged – click the mouse once the desired number of stars have been filled.
- II. Create & Manage – Creating walls
The “Create & Manage” page provides all of the tools necessary to build a wall from scratch. The link to this page is the right of two tabs located at the upper right hand corner of the interface. The top half of this page provides the 4 x 3 canvas representing the wall and the drop space for desired video clips. Several walls can be created, managed, and edited simultaneously through the utilization of appropriate tablature. The bottom half incorporates the search feature and other relevant functional components, including a “Parking Lot” and a “Record” feature.
a. Search. The “Search” tab is the first of three tabs laid out horizontally below the video canvas on the bottom half of the page. Immediately below the three tabs, in the upper left hand corner of this bottom half, a search field is provided for the user to enter keywords and search the network of shared walls. Type the desired search parameters into the text field and click the button labeled “Search” to conduct the search. Results appear in the form of thumbnails and abbreviated linked titles. Click the appropriate arrows to the far right of the tabs to browse between additional pages of results. Video clips can be viewed by clicking the small green arrow at the bottom left hand corner of each thumbnail. A window opens up with the appropriate controls for playback – a play/pause button, slider, volume adjustment, and menu button for YouTube-related functions. Click the small “X” at the upper right hand corner of this window to close. Users may drag the thumbnails of desired video clips directly onto the video canvas or add the clips to a “Parking Lot” by clicking the small blue arrow at the upper right hand corner of each thumbnail.
b. Parking Lot. The “Parking Lot” tab is the second of three tabs laid out horizontally below the video canvas on the bottom half of the page. The parking lot represents a space for users to store potential clips before actual addition to a wall. Video clips can be played back by clicking the small green arrow at the bottom left of the thumbnail or deleted by clicking the small red “X” at the upper right hand corner. Thumbnails can be freely dragged and dropped between the video canvas and the parking lot. Users may use the parking lot to store clips from several different walls, as the entire bottom half of the “Create & Manage” page remains independent of the walls on the top half. The parking lot only stores Internet-based clips added from the search results or dragged from the video canvas – recorded clips are managed separately. Click the green button labeled “Save” at the very bottom of the page after any addition to the parking lot or the red button labeled “Cancel” to undo all modifications.
c. Record. The “Record” tab is the third of three tabs laid out horizontally below the video canvas on the bottom half of the page. Click the link labeled “Record New Video!” to begin the recording process. A window opens up and Adobe Flash Player requests authorization to access the camera and microphone. An appropriately compatible webcam and/or microphone are required for this feature – see FAQ for more information and troubleshooting tips. Click “Allow” to enable this authorization and allow full recording capability. Provided the camera is properly connected to the computer, a live video feed appears in the window. Click the red circle to the far left of the time slider to begin recording. Clicking the same button, two vertical bars once recording is in process, pauses recording and clicking the square button to the immediate right of the record button terminates recording. Click the triangle button when appropriate to play back recorded video. A volume adjustment slider is available to the far right of the time slider. Once finished recording, properly label the video by entering a title in the text field below the video, next to “Name.” Click the button labeled “Save” to store the clip in the “Record” tab space or “Cancel” to close the window. Recorded clips appear in the blank space of the “Record” tab and can be dragged and dropped freely between this space and the video canvas. Video clips can be played back by clicking the small green arrow at the bottom left of the thumbnail or deleted by clicking the small red “X” at the upper right hand corner. Click the green button labeled “Save” at the very bottom of the page after any changes or new additions. Click the button labeled “Cancel” to undo all modifications.
d. Editing/New! The first tab on the top half of a fresh “Create & Manage” page is the blank template for a wall, titled “Wall of Videos” by default. Click this tab to edit important informational features of the wall: “Name,” “Description,” “Keywords,” “Sharing,” and “Category.” Users may edit and enter all of the relevant information into text fields or by selecting from drop-down menus in the box that opens up. Click the button labeled “Update” to save changes or the button labeled “Cancel” to close the window. Similarly, click the link to the immediate right of this first tab labeled “New!” to create new walls. A virtually identical box to the editing box opens up and all of the relevant information can be entered in a similar fashion – click the button labeled “Create” to save changes or the button labeled “Cancel” to close the window. Upon creation, an additional tab appears to the right of the first tab. New tabs appear for each new wall that is created, allowing for easy management and editing of multiple walls. Once a tab is selected, click the tab again at any point to edit the wall information. As the number of tabs/walls increases, arrows appear to the far left and right of the tabs to allow for easier navigation. To add and organize video clips onto walls, simply drag and drop the thumbnails from the search results, the parking lot, or the “Record” tab space. The clips can be arranged in space in whatever fashion the user desires, dragged and dropped freely between the canvas and the bottom half of the page, as well as within the canvas itself. Click the green button labeled “Save” at the very bottom of the page after any and all changes. Click the button labeled “Cancel” to undo all modifications.
- III. Sharing
Sharing walls with other users or outside members of the online community is facilitated by several conveniently labeled links. Multiple options are available for distribution of walls, including e-mail, messaging through the Facebook network, and Internet code.
a. E-mail. Click the link labeled “E-mail” at the bottom right hand corner of the bottom half of the “Search & Explore” page, below the list of individual clip titles. Upon clicking this link, a box opens up with two text fields. Enter the e-mail address of the desired recipient in the text field next to “To:” and an optional message in the larger text field next to “Message.” Click the button labeled “Send” to complete the process, or click the button labeled “Cancel” to return to the previous page.
b. Facebook. Click the link labeled “Share” at the bottom right hand corner of the bottom half of the “Search & Explore” page, below the list of individual clip titles. A Facebook interface opens up beneath the wall with two tabs: “Send a Message” and “Post to Profile.” Click the tab labeled “Send a Message.” Friends’ names, e-mail addresses, or pre-determined friend lists can be entered into this text field. Enter the appropriate “Subject” and “Message” into the appropriate text fields. The title of the wall can be edited by clicking the text (the default text is “apps.facebook.com”) above the link below the “Message” field. Click the button labeled “Send” once ready to send the message. Click the tab labeled “Post to Profile.” Enter any desired comment into the large text field. The title of the wall can be edited by clicking the text (the default text is “apps.facebook.com”) above the link below the “Comment” field. Clicking the button labeled “Post” places the wall as a “Posted Item” on the user’s profile.
c. Link/Embed. Click the link labeled “Link/Embed” at the bottom right hand corner of the bottom half of the “Search & Explore” page, below the list of individual clip titles. Upon clicking this link, a box opens up with four text fields of Internet code (Link, Html, Embed code, Xml). Click once within any text field to highlight the code and copy by either right-clicking and selecting “Copy” or using the appropriate keyboard shortcut (control + C, apple + C, etc.). The code can now be pasted and used in whatever fashion desired. Click the button labeled “Close” to return to the previous page.
d. Invite Your Friends! Click the link labeled “Invite Your Friends!” at the upper right hand corner of the interface. Click on the thumbnails of friends from either the “View All” tab or the “Unselected” tab to select invitation recipients. Click again on the thumbnails in the “Selected” tab at any point to unselect. A text field is available next to “Find Friends” to search for additional friends; a link labeled “Filter by Network” can be clicked to organize friends by network. Click the button labeled “Send Invite Request” at the bottom left corner once desired friends have been added or click either of the buttons labeled “Skip” to return to the previous page.
