MEL has the utmost respect for your privacy and wants you to know that it will not share with third parties other than Sun the personal data you submit to startupcamp.org Web site. Personal data may be submitted to the startupcamp.org Web site in the process of registering for the event or creating the user accounts needed to access the Startup Camp Wiki or the Startup Camp Discussion Forums area.
You should know that by working with the startupcamp.org Web site, there are several Web pages into which personal data can be or will get submitted. Here is a list of those pages and what happens to the data you submit:
1. The StartUp Camp event registration page: This is the page where we request certain information in order to register you for attendance to Startup Camp. Only a few of the fields are required and e-mail address is one of them. The data entered in this form is available to both MEL and Sun. MEL uses your e-mail address to (a) confirm that you filled out the form and that you want to attend Startup Camp and (b) to stay in touch with you regarding Startup Camp-specific issues. For example, logistics and scheduling updates.
The form includes a checkbox that impacts how your personal information may be shared. It is lableled as the PDA or Public Display of Attendance checkbox. It is considered to be good unconference eitiquette to publicly list your name on the list of attendees that are attending an unconference. In fact, for some unconferences, publicly listing your name on the event Web site is the only way to register for the event. In running the events we have run so far, we've learned however that certain situations exist where registrants are either uncomfortable editing a wiki page or, they are not at liberty to publicize their attendance on the Internet. For example, they may be taking a personal day from work to attend an event in hopes of finding a new job. Or, they may work for a company that is operating in stealth mode.
To accomodate these requirements and to make registration a bit more bulletproof, we established a form-based registration process and we decided to make one of the fields the PDA field. If you check this field, it means you are giving us the clearance to add your name to the public list of attendees that is viewable across the Internet. We will not publicize your e-mail address. However, if you do provide us with a blog address or a wiki profile page address, we will add those next to your name on the attendance list. Theoretically, the idea behind having either is to publicize information about yourself. So, including these links is a form of link love from us to you.
2. The wiki account creation page: Our system is not so integrated that when you register for the event, you are automatically given a login accout to the wiki. For that, you must visit the wiki account creation page. On that page, you are optionally invited to enter your email address (important if you lose your password) and your real name. You don't have to enter either one. But even if you do, that personal information will never be extracted from the wiki database for usage for any reason beyond that of what we might do in the course of normal wiki administration.
3. Startup Camp's threaded discussion forums: As an additional value added service so that you may carry on your conversations even when Startup Camp is not physically taking place, we've provided a threaded discussion capability. Using these forums also requires that you establish a user ID and password (separate from the ones used for the wiki). In the course of doing so, you may be asked for some personal information like your e-mail address. Like with the wiki account creation process, this information will likely never get accessed and even if it does, it will be strictly for the purposed of forum platform administration.
Finally, a word about creating personal profile pages on this wiki. This is a public wiki that's accessible to anyone on the Internet. Any information about yourself that you publish on a personal profile page on this wiki will be available to the public. If you are creating a personal profile page and there's certain information about yourself that you don't want to share with the world, please do not publish it on your personal profile page.
If you have any questions about the Startup Camp privacy policy... any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.
