Too many people associate networking with fake tans, bleached teeth, and Tony Robbins types pressing business cards into as many hands as possible. Startups need to network. Connecting with others is the lifeblood of a good startup. A good network can help you find capital, co-founders, office space, customers, employees, partnerships, and press. But a good network doesn't come from passing cards out like candy at a "networking event." A network is built on relationships. How can tech-minded founders build a network? How can you build relationships with people you hardly know? And why do industry parties and conferences feel like 8th grade dances with you standing on the wall watching the cool crowd have fun? Discussion plan
Why?
- Meet people. People can become partners, customers, investors, etc. And can introduce you to same.
Initial meeting
- Random chance.
- Meeting targets -- Look over attendee lists at events you're going to. Find people on the list you want to meet. Find out what they look like (try Google Image search, Flickr, others), find out a little about them, find them at the event.
It's about relationships
meeting 300 new people or even 30 people at an event is fairly pointless Make quality contacts, find out something about each person.
Write it down
Follow up
Relationships are built by helping people
Don't expect things in return
favors are not a zero-sum game
Keeping in touch
- Calendars, birthdays, special events
Getting things done for you -- ask for it
Roundtable: What works for you?
Additional Points mentioned:
- Have a party, invite people over to your house
- Organize your own dinner group (try to invite some interesting person Eg: a VC)
- Talk about something personal
- Ask about what people are passionate about
- Effective business is about relationships - these are personal things - be willing to give up something
- Building relationships requires PRACTICE
- Organize a session at Startup Camp - makes you approachable
- Go speak at an event - a lot of them are dying for speakers
- Get into the HUB of your business - simple spoke type relationships arent enough
- Wage a campaign to get into the hub
- HUBs usually have satellites - try to connect into them. Hubs trust them.
- Get all your friends/co-workers to connect to all the satellites
- Send a card 2-3 times a year
- Invest time and build a relationship BEFORE you need it
- A small card with a simple 3 line message get a 20% response rate (including a 300K contract) instead of the usual 0.5% rate
- Work with your strengths
- HUB theory contributed by Jennifer Yoon of StockWiki.com
- These additional points added by Shiraz Kanga of BlogEverywhere.com
To conclude:
- DONT BE AFRAID TO MEET PEOPLE
- GRANT PEOPLE FAVOURS
Networking book references by Jennifer Yoon of StockWiki (pre-launch)
I wanted to give references to the networking ideas I previously mentioned.
- Rain Making: The Professional's Guide to Attracting New Clients, by Ford Harding.* (A how-to book, for using your strongest talents to network, instead of trying improve your weakness. Programmers - post your code on open-source community. Graphic designers/artists - post a demo prominantly on your personal website. Writers - write a blog. You can spend a lot of time trying to improve your weakness, but in my opinion this is not time efficient, unless your weakness is so bad that it will sink your career. Only by networking using your strengths can you hope to achieve a 40X return above the average response rate!)
- Linked: The New Science of Networks, by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi.* (This book provides a good overview. Networks is a hot topic in theoretical math (also known as graph theory). Human networks have large hubs
