Best Startup Contest

Winners of the Best Startup Contest San Francisco, May 5, 2008

How it works

Upon gaining entry into Startup Camp every attendee will be given a single wooden nickel. Then, sometime during the event we will be running what are called Speed Geeking sessions (like speed dating sessions, only geekier). During these sessions, Camp attendees will travel in small, organized groups from table to table as competing startup founders and/or execs present their startup businesses for review. Each founder will have about 5 minutes to convince each group that visits his or her table that their business is most deserving for the Best Startup Contest first place prize.

After the attendees have visited all the startup founders, they will decide for themselves which business is the best business (using their own criteria) and give the founder of that startup their wooden nickel. The startup with the most wooden nickels at the end of Startup Camp wins!

The rules

Basically, there are no rules (just kidding, click here to make legal happy).

How to enter or judge

To enter:

  • Register on-site by signing your name to the Best Startup Contest entry form located at the registration table.
  • Add your startup to the Speed Geeking page on the Startup Camp wiki prior to Contest so attendees can review your startup idea. There are no web submissions for this contest, posting your startup idea to this page just gets you more visibility, it does not enter you into the contest. To see the startups that were entered in prior Best Startup Contests, visit:
  • Attend a mandatory contestant meeting the morning of the contest.
  • Present your idea to the other attendees during the Best Startup Contest Speed Geeking sessions.
  • Collect your wooden nickels and turn them into the Startup Camp hosts during the Wooden Penny Accounting session to be held following the Speed Geeking sessions.
  • Winners will be announced at the end of Camp during the Awards & Closing Remarks. You must be present to win.

If you are a startup that has entered the contest, make sure to do some campaigning during the Camp!

To judge:

  • You will be given a wooden nickel sometime during Startup Camp by the Startup Camp organizers. After the Best Startup Contest Speed Geeking sessions, give your wooden nickel to the startup you think has the best idea.

If you are a judge/voter, make sure to seek out the contestants competing in the Best Startup Contest to find out more about why they think they should win!
